Thymus vulgaris subsp. fragrantissimus - Orange thyme

Orange thyme is a compact, evergreen herb with tiny aromatic leaves that release a distinctive citrus fragrance when touched. An excellent choice for herb gardens, gravel beds, and containers, it combines ornamental value with culinary usefulness and thrives in dry, sunny conditions.

  • Exposure: Highly wind tolerant once established and well suited to coastal gardens, tolerating salt-laden air and maritime conditions.
  • Size: 20–30 cm tall, with a spread of 30–45 cm.
  • Soil: Light, well-drained soils, including sandy, chalky, and gravelly ground; dislikes heavy, waterlogged soils.
  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Flowering time: June to August.
  • Uses: Culinary herb and traditional medicinal plant.
  • Wildlife benefits: The nectar-rich pink flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects, making orange thyme an excellent plant for wildlife-friendly and pollinator gardens.
