Mentha spicata - Garden mint

Garden mint is a vigorous, aromatic perennial herb with bright green, lance-shaped leaves and spikes of lilac-pink flowers in summer. Easy to grow and highly productive, it is a classic addition to herb gardens, though it is best grown in containers or confined spaces to prevent spreading.

  • Exposure: Moderately wind tolerant and suitable for most garden situations; moderately coastal tolerant, coping with light to moderate salt-laden air when grown in sheltered positions.
  • Size: 60–90 cm tall, with a spreading habit that can extend well beyond 1 m if unrestricted.
  • Soil: Moist, fertile, humus-rich soils; thrives in loam and clay and tolerates occasional wet conditions.
  • Sun: Full sun or partial shade.
  • Flowering time: July to September.
  • Uses: Culinary herb and traditional medicinal plant.
  • Wildlife benefits: The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other pollinating insects, making garden mint an excellent plant for supporting biodiversity in herb and wildlife gardens.
