Filipendula ulmaria - Meadowsweet

A graceful native perennial of damp meadows, riverbanks, and wetlands, meadowsweet is valued for its frothy clusters of creamy-white, almond-scented flowers that bloom in summer. It is an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens with reliably moist soil.

  • Exposure: Hardy and wind tolerant; suitable for exposed sites and moderately coastal tolerant, though it prefers some shelter from strong salt-laden winds.
  • Size: 1–1.5 m tall, with a spread of 60–90 cm.
  • Soil: Moist to wet, fertile soils; thrives in clay, loam, or organic-rich ground and tolerates poor drainage.
  • Sun: Full sun or partial shade; flowering is best in full sun where moisture is plentiful.
  • Flowering time: June to August.
  • Uses: Traditional medicinal and culinary plant; also used as a natural dye plant.
  • Wildlife benefits: Highly attractive to pollinating insects, including bees, hoverflies, and beetles. The dense growth provides shelter for small invertebrates and contributes to the biodiversity of damp garden habitats.
