Althaea officinalis - Marshmallow
Marshmallow is an elegant herbaceous perennial native to riverbanks, estuaries and damp meadows. It produces soft, velvety grey-green foliage and delicate pale pink flowers throughout summer, bringing both ornamental value and ecological benefits to the garden.
Exposure: Very tolerant of wind and well suited to coastal gardens, coping with salt-laden air and maritime conditions, especially when established.
Size: 1–1.5 m tall, with a spread of 60–90 cm.
Soil: Moist, fertile soils; thrives in loam, clay, or sandy soils and tolerates occasional waterlogging as well as slightly saline conditions.
Sun: Full sun or light partial shade.
Flowering time: July to September.
Uses: Traditional medicinal herb and culinary plant.
Wildlife benefits: The flowers attract bees, hoverflies, and other pollinating insects, while the foliage supports various invertebrates. Its long flowering season makes it a valuable nectar source in wildlife-friendly gardens.
