Ajuga reptans - Bugle

This native Irish wildflower is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial with glossy leaves and spikes of deep blue to violet flowers in spring. Ajuga reptans is a versatile groundcover, ideal for edging paths, underplanting shrubs, or naturalising in grass. Its dense foliage helps suppress weeds while adding rich colour and texture to shady areas.

  • Exposure: Full sun to partial shade; tolerant of coastal and exposed conditions.
  • Size: Typically 10–20 cm (4–8 in) high and spreads up to 60 cm (24 in).
  • Soil: Prefers moist but well-drained soil; adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay and loam.
  • Sun: Grows well in partial shade but also tolerates full sun if the soil remains moist.
  • Flowering Time: Spring to early summer (April–June).
