Thymus x citriodorus - Lemon Thyme

Lemon thyme (Thymus × citriodorus) is a compact, aromatic evergreen perennial with small green leaves that release a fresh lemon fragrance when crushed. Its delicate pink to lilac flowers make it an attractive choice for herb gardens, borders, rockeries and containers.

  • Exposure: Tolerant of wind and suitable for exposed, well-drained sites. Coastal tolerant, including areas with salt-laden winds, provided the soil is free-draining.
  • Size: Approximately 15–30 cm tall and 30–45 cm wide.
  • Soil: Prefers light, dry, well-drained soil, particularly chalky, sandy or stony soils. Does not tolerate wet or poorly drained conditions.
  • Sun: Full sun; best growth, fragrance and flowering occur in a sunny position.
  • Flowering time: June–August, with small pink to lilac flowers.
  • Uses: Culinary herb, valued for its lemon-scented foliage. Also grown as an aromatic and ornamental plant.
  • Wildlife benefits: Flowers are rich in nectar and attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Its low, spreading habit also provides useful cover for small invertebrates.
