Aquilegia 'William Guinness'

A striking, tall perennial with large, spurred flowers in deep purple, almost black with contrasting white, cupped centers. Aquilegia ‘William Guinness’ adds dramatic colour and architectural interest to borders and cottage gardens while attracting early-season pollinators.

  • Exposure: Prefers sheltered or semi-sheltered sites; moderately wind-tolerant; not particularly coastal tolerant.
  • Size: Typically 60–90 cm (24–36 in) high and 30–45 cm (12–18 in) spread.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil; tolerates a range of garden soils but dislikes heavy, waterlogged conditions.
  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade; some protection from harsh afternoon sun in warmer areas is beneficial.
  • Flowering Time: Late spring to early summer (May–July).
  • Wildlife Benefits: Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, providing an early nectar source.
