Symphytum × uplandicum - Comfrey 'Bocking 14'

Comfrey ‘Bocking 14’  is a vigorous, sterile cultivar of comfrey widely used in permaculture and organic gardening. It is valued for its deep roots that mine nutrients from the soil, producing abundant leafy growth that can be cut several times a year for mulch, compost, or liquid feed.

  • Exposure: Very hardy and tolerant of exposed sites; generally wind tolerant once established. Reasonably tolerant of coastal conditions but best with some shelter from strong salt winds.
  • Size: Typically 60–100 cm tall with a spread of about 60–90 cm, forming a large clump.
  • Soil: Prefers deep, fertile, moisture-retentive soil but adapts to a wide range of soils, including heavy clay.
  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Flowering time: Late spring to early summer (May–July).
  • Uses: Permaculture plant for mulch, compost activator, and liquid plant feed. Also has medicinal uses.
  • Wildlife benefits: Flowers provide an early and valuable nectar source for bees and other pollinating insects.
