Inula helenium - Elecamane

A tall, robust perennial with large, hairy leaves and striking, bright yellow, daisy-like flowers. Inula helenium has traditional medicinal uses and is valued for its architectural foliage and late summer blooms in herb and mixed perennial gardens.

  • Exposure: Moderately wind-tolerant, though will need staking in exposed locations; tolerates coastal conditions if soil is well-drained.
  • Size: Typically 150-200 cm high and 100-150cm spread.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil; tolerates heavier soils if not waterlogged.
  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade for best flowering and robust growth.
  • Flowering Time: Mid to late summer (July–September).
  • Uses: Traditionally noted for medicinal purposes.
  • Wildlife Benefits: Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; provides shelter for insects.
