Silene dioca, Red Campion

A charming native wildflower found along woodland edges, hedgerows, and meadows. It forms clumps of soft green foliage topped with vivid rose-pink blooms, providing long-lasting colour and valuable wildlife support in naturalistic plantings.


Exposure: Moderately wind-tolerant; suitable for open or semi-sheltered sites. Not strongly salt-tolerant, so only suitable for mild, inland-facing coastal gardens.
• Size: Typically 60–90 cm tall and 30–45 cm wide.
• Soil: Moist but well-drained soil; tolerates a range from fertile loam to light, humus-rich woodland soil.
• Sun: Full sun to partial shade; often happiest in dappled shade.
• Flowering Time: Late spring to early autumn (usually May–September).
• Wildlife Benefits: Excellent nectar source for bees, butterflies, and day-flying moths; larval food plant for several moth species.
