Arctium lappa - Greater Burdock

Greater burdock is a robust biennial wildflower with large, heart-shaped leaves and distinctive purple thistle-like flowers followed by burr-covered seed heads. Native to parts of Europe and Asia and naturalised elsewhere, it is valued for its architectural presence, wildlife benefits, and long history of practical uses.

  • Exposure: Grows well in sheltered to moderately exposed sites and tolerates wind reasonably well once established. Moderately tolerant of coastal conditions but performs best away from areas of severe salt exposure.
  • Size: Approximately 1.5–2.5 m high × 1–1.5 m spread.
  • Soil: Deep, fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Adapts to a range of soil types, including clay and loam.
  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Flowering Time: July to September.
  • Uses: Culinary and medicinal plant; the roots, young leaf stalks, and shoots have traditional food uses. Also used historically as a medicinal herb.
  • Wildlife Benefits: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects. Seed heads provide food for birds, particularly finches, and the dense foliage offers shelter for invertebrates.
