Thymus vulgaris - Winter thyme

This variety of thyme holds it's leaves better through our cold wet winters. It is an aromatic perennial subshrub with small, grey-green leaves and clusters of tubular pink to purple flowers. Widely grown for culinary and medicinal uses, it is drought-tolerant, hardy, and highly valued in herb gardens, rockeries, and sunny borders.

  • Exposure: Very good wind tolerance; suitable for coastal gardens.
  • Size: Typically 20–30 cm tall, spreading 30–45 cm.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, light, sandy or stony soils; tolerates poor, dry ground.
  • Sun: Full sun.
