Mentha spicata - Garden Mint

Garden Mint is a vigorous, aromatic perennial herb widely grown for its mild, fresh, sweetly scented leaves. It spreads easily by underground runners and is a staple of herb gardens, valued for both culinary use and its ability to attract pollinators.

  • Exposure: Reasonably wind tolerant in garden settings but prefers some shelter; generally not suited to very exposed coastal conditions (not reliably coastal tolerant).

  • Size: Typically 30–90 cm tall and spreading widely through rhizomes, often forming dense patches.

  • Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil but adapts to a wide range of garden soils.

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

  • Flowering Time: Mid to late summer (usually July–September).

  • Uses: Widely used culinary herb for teas, sauces, salads, and drinks; also traditionally used in herbal preparations.

  • Wildlife Benefits: Flowers provide nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects.
