Cymbopogon citratus - Lemongrass

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is a strongly aromatic, clump-forming perennial grass with long, narrow, bright green leaves and a distinctive citrus scent. The insides of the tubular leaves are often used in south east Asian cooking. It is a heat loving plant and must be grown under cover, either a polytunnel or greenhouse to protect it from cold, especially over winter.

  • Exposure: Best in a sheltered position protected from strong winds, as the long leaves can become damaged. Not reliably coastal tolerant, particularly where exposed to salt-laden winds.
  • Size: Approximately 90–150 cm tall and 60–100 cm wide.
  • Soil: Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil with good organic matter. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
  • Sun: Full sun; requires plenty of warmth and light for strong growth.
