Salvia sclarea - Clary Sage

Clary sage is a striking, aromatic biennial or short-lived perennial known for its tall stems of pale pink, lilac, or white flowers held above large, textured leaves. Native to the Mediterranean region, it brings a soft, slightly wild look to gardens and is valued for both ornamental beauty and traditional herbal uses.

  • Exposure: Prefers a sheltered to moderately exposed site; reasonably wind tolerant once established. Generally not considered strongly coastal tolerant, as salt-laden winds can damage foliage.

  • Size: Typically 90–120 cm tall and 60–90 cm wide when in full flower.

  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential; tolerates poor, sandy, or stony soils and dislikes heavy, waterlogged ground.

  • Sun: Full sun for best growth and flowering.

  • Flowering time: Early to mid-summer (usually June–August depending on climate).

  • Uses: Culinary (limited use), medicinal, and widely grown for aromatic and essential oil production.

  • Wildlife benefits: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, bumblebees, and other pollinators.
