A compact, dwarf, alpine form of Japanese scabious producing neat mounds of finely cut foliage topped with pincushion-like, violet-blue flowers. Ideal for rock gardens, troughs, and the front of sunny borders, it offers long-lasting colour on a small scale.
• Exposure: Generally wind-tolerant; suitable for open sites. Not strongly salt-tolerant, so only marginally suited to mild coastal gardens.
• Size: Around 10–15 cm tall in leaf; flower stems up to 20 cm; spreads 15–25 cm.
• Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile to poor soil; prefers gritty or sandy, alkaline to neutral substrates. Avoid heavy, wet conditions.
• Sun: Full sun.
• Flowering Time: Late spring to early autumn (typically May–September).
• Wildlife Benefits: Excellent for bees, hoverflies, and butterflies, providing a reliable nectar source over a long season.
